The Configure Window

The Configure window allows users to customize various aspects of CARMA without needing to modify its source code. Currently, there are six options that can be configured: the axis labels, the axis range, the number of axis steps, the number of samples per second, the color gradient, and the input method.

Alphanumeric text can be displayed above and below the rating scale’s axis. The Lower Label is displayed below the axis and corresponds to its Minimum Value. The Upper Label is displayed above the axis and corresponds to its Maximum Value.

The rating scale can be configured to span any numerical range by inputting an Axis Minimum Value and Axis Maximum Value. These values must be numeric and the maximum must exceed the minimum. The number of segments the rating axis is divided into can be configured by inputting a Number of Steps. This value must be a positive integer greater than 1; it determines the size of the slider box, the number of axis ticks, and the numerical values displayed on the axis.

The Samples per Second settings determines the number of joystick samples output per second. The actual number of times CARMA samples the joystick per second will vary between computers and conditions. So, to correct for differences in achieved sampling rate, missing data, and joystick jitter/noise, CARMA attempts to sample at 12 samples per second and then averages the samples based on their corresponding multimedia time stamps. For instance, when Samples per Second is set to 1.00, all samples with a time stamp between 0.00 s and 1.00 s will be averaged together (as well as 1.00 s and 2.00 s and so on). Setting Samples per Second to less than 1.00 will average samples together from multiple seconds. For instance, when Samples per Second is set to 0.50, all samples with a time stamp between 0.00 s and 2.00 s will be averaged together (as well as 2.00 s and 4.00 s and so on).

The rating scale displays a linear color gradient between three colors. These colors can be customized by selecting the corresponding buttons. Although any colors may be chosen, lighter colors are preferable to preserve the visibility of the black numerical values on the rating scale. The input method can be set to "Keyboard + Mouse" or "Computer Joystick" and will determine what actions the user must take to move the slider when collecting ratings. When one option is selected, the other input method will have no effect on the slider.

The Save as Default button will first check that the inputted configuration is usable. If these values are usable, then the inputted configuration is saved to default.mat. These changes will be reflected in all future CARMA sessions. To apply these settings for the current session, select the Apply Changes button.

The Apply Changes button will first check that the inputted configuration is usable. If these values are usable, then the Settings window is closed and the CARMA window is updated to reflect the selected changes. If these values are not usable, a detailed error message is presented.
